Other recent OSX versions should work too. Some of my findings and conclusions: The native Apple Mac 'Cisco IPSec' VPN client requires XAUTH. Attempting to connect without XAUTH is a hit and miss affair for IKE Phase 1. Even if Phase 1 completes, IPSec Phase 2 always fails.

The instructions below are tested on Mac OS 10.7.3 (Lion). Open System Preferences > Network from Mac applications menu. Click the "+" button to create a new service, then select VPN as the interface type, and choose L2TP over IPsec from the pull-down menu.
